I live in and old Queenslander style house, high set, cut into a hill in my home town. Internal tongue and groove walls with a weatherboard exterior. Paint flaking on the internal walls from old age. Old style casement windows that are hard to open and close due to ground movement. While it is showing it age it has served us well, withstood a Category 3/4 cyclone.
Although the kitchen is a little more stylish with new benches and cupboards and some tiling covering some of the tongue and groove walls. The bathroom is a mix of styles with and old claw foot bathtub, partial tiling, a new vanity unit and tongue and groove walling. The only fibro is the extension that was done to the rear of the house that houses the laundry and toilets.
It may be old but it is still home and as you do we have a variety of picture frames and other items hanging on the wall. With my work I go into a lot of residential properties and most people have the family portraits and grand kids on the walls. There are plenty of places that have stock photo frames hanging up. eg. Pictures of New York city, Picture with names of capital cities on it or inspirational quotes. As I look around our walls the majority are of nieces, nephews, family portraits, wedding photos and a marriage certificate.
The odd ones out would be Metallica, Marilyn Munroe and a tiger in the lounge room and Star signs (Gemini and Aries) on the walls in the sleep out. Tonnes of knick knacks and keep stakes lines the cupboards. There used to be a Jack Daniels picture hanging up but it got removed to make room for the family pictures. We used them to fill up the spaces on the walls so they didn’t look so bland but that was when we were younger and not too worried about starting a family.
But as we’ve aged the focus changes from drinking to more family orientated pictures. As we are unable to naturally have our own children the walls get filled with family, nieces, nephews to give the place a more homely, loving vibe as a reminder of what is really important in life.
The house sure does have the lived in feeling.
